Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Two dental patients and team member discussing dental insurance coverage

Most people assume dental insurance is only used when you experience a noticeable dental issue, such as decay or gum disease. This is similar to how medical insurance is treated, but it’s actually quite different than a dental plan. For example, one of the reasons insurance companies offer the most coverage for preventive dental services (i.e. checkups and cleanings) is because they want to use your plan regularly. It’s always cheaper to prevent dental problems before they occur, rather than treat them after they’ve appeared.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Most plans cover services at different percentages depending on how simple or complex they are. For example, insurance plans will typically follow a 100-80-50 model that looks like the following:

  • Preventive Care – Includes coverage for dental exams, cleanings, and X-rays (usually covered at or close to 100%).
  • Minor Restorative Care – Includes coverage for dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy (typically covered between 70% and 80%).
  • Major Restorative Care – Includes coverage for dental crowns, bridges, and dentures (covered up to 50%).
